Casillas del Ángel
10 km east of Puerto del Rosario. The church of Santa Ana (1871), not very visible from the road, holds a great surprise. Its square is surrounded by trees and the black porch of the bell tower marks a strong contrast with the rest of the immaculate white architecture. A stroll through the village allows you to see the picturesque brick coloured country houses. The local craftsmanship is most authentic, as demonstrated by Doña Catalina Méndez, who has maintained the family tradition of making bags, carpets and villas. With palm fibres, they are used to make cheese trays, brooms and hats.

The Olive
15 km from Tenerife, 25 km from Puerto del Rosario Amongst old mills, herds of goats and white houses, this town that seems to be asleep, preserves the remains of a church with large buttresses and stone corners from the time when it was the capital of the island.

Here you will find the Casa de los Coroneles and the Canary Islands Craft Centre, the latter with a collection of modern art from the area.

El Cotillo
12 km northwest of La Oliva. The modest church is dedicated to the church of Buen Viaje, the castle of Rico Roque (1743) and the lighthouse, from where the view embraces the ocean of turquoise waters, and where the foam of the waves dies on the white sand speckled with black rocks.

Corralejo
42 km north of Puerto del Rosario. This town is bustling with tourism. Lanzarote can be seen on the horizon, and in front of it, is the island of Lobos, towards which excursions are made.

El Jable
5 km southeast of Corralejo. As you leave the hustle and bustle of Corralejo, you suddenly enter the desert. It is a small desert of golden dunes and, on the horizon, a mirage appears, which is the sea.

As we continue on the road to Puerto del Rosario, we enter the badlands. There is not a single village for kilometres, but as we advance little by little, from the road, roads lead to the sea. The first one you come across will take you to a nice beach which will probably be deserted.

Routes by car in Fuerteventura south:

Betancuria
30 km southwest of Puerto del Rosario. If there is one place worth visiting in Fuerteventura it is Betancuria. Founded in 1405 by the conqueror Juan de Bethancourt, and former capital of the island, it is located in an idyllic valley. One can’t get enough of wandering through its paved streets flanked by beautiful houses that highlight their porticos.

Located in the cathedral square, the Church of Santa Maria (17th century) stands out, with a polychrome altarpiece and a wooden statue of the Virgin Santa Catalina from the 15th century on the high altar. It also houses important pieces of silverwork and the flag of the conquest, the banner that Bethancourt waved on his arrival. As well as the Museum of Sacred Art and the House of Santa Maria.

Vega of Rio de Palmas
2 km south of Betancuria. The road that links Betancuria with Vega de Rio Palmas is a marvel. Palm trees and vegetable crops follow one another along the riverbank, surrounded by stone walls, and the white or brick farmhouses rise up with a picturesque air over the terraced fields. In the village’s flowery wooded square, opposite the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña (1666), rest the goats and dogs that watch over it.

Just past the reservoir, among the rocks, is the small chapel of the Virgen de la Peña, which pilgrims come to all year round.

Pájara
8 km south of Betancuria. The road runs along the slope of the hillside of this desert region where only agaves grow. In the surroundings of La Pájara, the passing of time erodes the brick houses. With a bit of luck it is possible to witness the almost biblical scene of a dromedary turning a waterwheel to draw water from a well. The church, surrounded by a splendid garden, has a stone portal sculpted with Aztec elements. Inside is the statue of Our Lady of Regla, which was probably brought from Mexico.

Costa Calma
60 km south of Puerto del Rosario. Leaving Tarajalejo behind in the direction of Morro del Jable, a road begins with a wild beauty, where the black rock cliffs and numerous coves precede a forest of pines and cactus, giving rise to a landscape of dunes that extends to huge beaches bathed in turquoise water and a lagoon without a reef.

From Morro del Jable there is a 20 km road that leads to the most extreme point of the island, Punta del Tigre, where the beaches extend infinitely towards the west. A real paradise for divers and loners.
